Vital Pour vs DIRTEA: Two Mushroom Coffees, Compared Honestly

Vital Pour vs DIRTEA is a comparison between two different ideas of what "mushroom coffee" means. Clarity Brew is ground Arabica coffee with mushroom extract blended into it, brewed the way you'd brew any bag of coffee. DIRTEA is a soluble mushroom-and-adaptogen extract powder you scoop into hot water, more instant coffee than brewed coffee. Both call themselves mushroom coffee. What that word actually buys you is not the same.

Is DIRTEA the Same Thing as Clarity Brew?

Not quite, and the difference matters more than the shared "mushroom coffee" label suggests. Clarity Brew is ground coffee: Arabica beans with Lion's Mane and Chaga blended in, sold by the bag, brewed in a filter, French press, or drip machine the same way you'd brew any coffee. DIRTEA's Coffee Super Blend is a soluble extract powder. Its own instructions say to scoop 2.5 g into a cup, pour in hot water (or 35 ml for an espresso-style shot), stir, and add milk if you want it. There are no grounds to filter out, because there's nothing ground about it.

That's not a knock on either approach, it's a format difference with real consequences. A bag of Clarity Brew makes coffee the way coffee has always been made. A pouch of DIRTEA makes a drink that tastes coffee-adjacent but skips brewing entirely, closer to instant coffee with mushroom and adaptogen extract mixed in. If what you want is an actual cup of brewed coffee with mushrooms added, Clarity Brew is that. If what you want is a fast, no-equipment mushroom-and-coffee drink you can make with a kettle, DIRTEA is built for that instead.

Who Discloses More: the Mushroom Breakdown?

Grouped bar chart comparing Vital Pour and DIRTEA on mushroom disclosure, showing DIRTEA's per-species milligram breakdown against Vital Pour's larger combined total

This is the one place DIRTEA actually out-discloses Vital Pour, and it's worth saying plainly rather than skipping past it. DIRTEA's product page lists three mushroom extracts by name and exact amount: Lion's Mane 400 mg, Chaga 300 mg, Tremella 300 mg, for a mushroom-only total of 1,000 mg per serving. Clarity Brew's label states Lion's Mane and Chaga as 5% and 5% of the bag by weight and gives a combined total, "over 1,200 mg of pure mushroom extracts per serving," but doesn't break that figure down by species. A shopper can tell Clarity Brew has more total mushroom extract than DIRTEA. A shopper can't tell from Clarity Brew's own label how much of that 1,200 mg is Lion's Mane versus how much is Chaga.

DIRTEA's label answers that question for its own three mushrooms down to the milligram. That's a genuinely more granular disclosure, even though its total mushroom amount is smaller.

It's not a clean win for DIRTEA, though. Two of DIRTEA's five listed actives, maca root and ashwagandha root, aren't mushrooms at all. They're named clearly on the ingredient list, so this isn't a hidden-ingredient problem, but it means a product marketed as "mushroom coffee" is partly made of two ingredients with nothing to do with mushrooms. Clarity Brew's formula stays to two ingredients beyond the coffee itself, both of them mushrooms, which is a simpler label to read even if it's less granular on the exact split.

Why the Price Flips Depending on How You Measure It

Two-panel bar chart showing DIRTEA far more expensive per ounce than Vital Pour, but cheaper per serving because of its smaller scoop size

Here's where the format difference changes the math, not just the label. Clarity Brew's 12 oz bag costs $34.98, which works out to $2.92 per ounce. DIRTEA's 150 g pouch costs $49.00, which works out to about $9.26 per ounce, roughly 3.2 times more expensive by weight. If you only looked at price per ounce, DIRTEA would look like the pricier product by a wide margin, and it is, by weight.

But weight isn't what you're actually buying per cup. Clarity Brew's 340 g bag is labeled 34 servings, about 10 g of ground coffee per cup, the amount a standard scoop of coffee grounds usually runs. DIRTEA's 150 g pouch is labeled 60 servings at 2.5 g per scoop, a much smaller and more concentrated amount, because it's extract powder, not bulk ground beans. Run the actual per-serving math and it flips: Clarity Brew costs $1.03 a cup, DIRTEA costs $0.82 a cup, DIRTEA about 20% cheaper per serving despite costing over three times as much per ounce.

Both numbers are real. Neither one is "the" honest price, because the two products aren't portioned the same way. Price per ounce tells you what you're paying for the bag. Price per serving tells you what you're paying for the drink. DIRTEA wins on the second number, Clarity Brew's bag simply weighs more per cup because it's whole ground coffee, not a concentrated scoop.

What About Caffeine?

Clarity Brew doesn't publish a caffeine figure. DIRTEA does: 50 mg per serving, stated directly on its own product page, alongside the claim that this is "up to 80% less caffeine than your average cup." Mayo Clinic lists an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee at about 96 mg of caffeine, which makes DIRTEA's 50 mg roughly 48% less, a real reduction, just a smaller one than "80% less" implies unless the comparison point is a stronger reference than a standard 8 oz brewed cup. Either way, DIRTEA gives you a number to check that math against. Clarity Brew doesn't publish one at all, so there's nothing to check on the caffeine side of its own label.

Where DIRTEA Wins

Credit where it's due:

  • Per-species mushroom disclosure. Exact milligrams for Lion's Mane, Chaga, and Tremella individually, versus Clarity Brew's combined total with no species breakdown.
  • A published caffeine figure. 50 mg per serving, stated plainly. Clarity Brew doesn't publish a number at all.
  • Cheaper per serving. $0.82 a cup versus Clarity Brew's $1.03, because its scoop size is smaller and more concentrated.
  • No brewing equipment required. A kettle and a cup are enough; there's no filter, grounds, or cleanup.
  • Retail availability. Sold through Anthropologie and Free People in addition to its own site, a retail footprint Clarity Brew doesn't have yet.

Where Vital Pour Wins

  • More total mushroom extract. Over 1,200 mg per serving versus DIRTEA's 1,000 mg, even though Clarity Brew's figure isn't split by species.
  • A simpler formula. Coffee plus two named mushrooms, nothing else. DIRTEA's "mushroom coffee" also contains maca and ashwagandha, neither of which is a mushroom.
  • Cheaper per ounce. $2.92 versus DIRTEA's $9.26, a real difference if you're comparing the bag itself rather than the cup.
  • An actual brewed cup of coffee. Ground beans, brewed the way coffee has always been brewed, for anyone who wants the ritual and not just the drink.

So Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Choose DIRTEA if: you want the most granular per-species mushroom numbers available in this category, a published caffeine figure to work with, no brewing equipment, and you don't mind paying a premium per ounce for a smaller, more concentrated scoop.

Choose Vital Pour if: you want an actual brewed cup of coffee rather than a stirred extract drink, a simpler two-ingredient formula, more total mushroom extract per serving, and a lower cost per ounce of product.

Neither label is hiding anything here, DIRTEA names its amounts in detail, Clarity Brew names its mushrooms and gives a combined total. They're just answering different questions. If the question you care about is "exactly how much of each mushroom am I getting," DIRTEA's label answers it more precisely. If the question is "am I getting an actual cup of brewed coffee," that's Clarity Brew.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DIRTEA disclose more than Vital Pour? On a per-species basis, yes. DIRTEA lists Lion's Mane, Chaga, and Tremella at exact milligram amounts. Clarity Brew states Lion's Mane and Chaga as percentages of the bag plus a combined total of over 1,200 mg, but doesn't split that total by species.

Is DIRTEA ground coffee or instant? Soluble. DIRTEA's Coffee Super Blend is a powder you scoop into hot water and stir; it isn't brewed from grounds. Clarity Brew is ground Arabica coffee brewed the normal way.

Which is cheaper, DIRTEA or Vital Pour? Depends on the measure. Per ounce, Vital Pour is cheaper ($2.92 versus $9.26). Per serving, DIRTEA is cheaper ($0.82 versus $1.03), because its scoop size is smaller.

Does DIRTEA's mushroom coffee contain only mushrooms? No. Alongside Lion's Mane, Chaga, and Tremella, it also contains maca root and ashwagandha root, neither of which is a mushroom, though both are named clearly on the ingredient list.
