The question worth answering is not whether it works. It is what changes when the water has to pass through paper instead of a metal mesh, because "paper filter" gets treated as one property when it is actually two, and they behave nothing alike.

Two Filters, Not One

A filter can stop something two different ways. It can be a sieve, holding back anything physically wider than its openings. Or it can be a trap, catching something through surface chemistry and depth, regardless of how small that something is. Paper does both, and the two mechanisms have almost nothing to do with each other.

The sieve question is about mushroom powder. Ground mushroom coffee carries its mushroom content as a solid: powder milled to roughly 200 mesh, about 75 microns, or in some products a spray dried extract closer to 10 microns or smaller. Whether that solid reaches your cup is a matter of geometry, whether the particle is wider than the gaps in the barrier it has to cross.

The trap question is about cafestol and kahweol, two oil-soluble compounds naturally present in coffee. They are not solid particles. They travel dissolved in the coffee's own oils, and a barrier does not need a small enough hole to catch them, it needs enough fiber and surface area to hold onto oil as the liquid passes through. This is why paper filters famously strip these compounds out of coffee while metal mesh does not, a difference documented since the 1990s and still measured today.

AeroPress ships with a thin paper disc, and here is the honest gap: no manufacturer publishes an aperture figure for it, the same way none publish one for a French press mesh. So the sieve question, how much mushroom powder physically gets through, cannot be answered with a specific number for this filter. The trap question can, because it has actually been measured, just not for AeroPress by name. Here is what is known and what is not.

What Has Actually Been Measured

A 2025 study in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases measured cafestol and kahweol by mass spectrometry across French press, percolator, boiled coffee, and home paper filtered drip coffee. It did not test an AeroPress specifically. But it did establish, with real lab numbers, exactly how large the gap between metal and paper filtration is.

Paper filtered drip coffee measured roughly one eighth of French press's cafestol. That is the trap mechanism doing real, quantified work, and it explains why the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations now advise filtered coffee over unfiltered for exactly this reason.

AeroPress was not in this study's brew list, so we are not going to tell you it measured 11.5 mg/L, because nobody measured that. What we can say honestly is that AeroPress uses the same barrier material as the paper filtered drip coffee in this table, so the mechanism that pulled that number down from French press's 86.8 mg/L is the same mechanism sitting in your AeroPress chamber. That is a reasonable inference from how paper filtration works, not a substitute for a study nobody has run.

What Has Not Been Measured

The powder question is different, and less settled. A French press mesh has a published-ish range, reported across consumer specifications at roughly 60 to 300 microns, which sits close enough to mushroom powder's 75 microns that outcomes vary by press. AeroPress paper has no equivalent public figure we could verify. It is reasonable to assume paper fiber, being a depth filter rather than a single-diameter mesh, catches more solid material than a coarse metal sieve does in general. But "reasonable to assume" is not a number, and we are not going to invent one just because the French press piece had one. The one honest data point we do have is time: AeroPress steeps for 30 to 60 seconds before pressing, against a French press's four minutes. Less contact time means less of the powder has fully hydrated and settled before the water leaves the chamber, which likely shifts more of the fine sediment toward the bottom of the puck rather than toward your cup, but that is a mechanical inference from steep time, not a measurement either.

How to Brew Mushroom Coffee in an AeroPress

The method is AeroPress's own standard recipe, with one adjustment for the powder.

16 to 18 grams of ground mushroom coffee, roughly one heaping scoop, into the chamber. This matches AeroPress's own published brewing instructions.

Water at 185°F (85°C), poured to the fill line marked on the chamber. If you do not have a temperature controlled kettle, boil and let it rest for a minute first.

Stir for a full 10 seconds, not the standard 3. Mushroom powder is lighter than coffee grounds and clumps at the surface fast. The extra stirring time is the one departure from AeroPress's own instructions, and it exists for the same reason the French press method calls for a stir: wet the powder properly or find it floating later.

Steep 60 seconds, or 30 if you are using a fine, freshly ground blend.

Press with steady, gentle pressure until you hear the hissing sound begin and end. Do not force it.

Ratio, if you want to move off the default: the Specialty Coffee Association's Golden Cup standard sits around 60 grams of coffee per liter of water, close to 1:16.7. AeroPress's own default lands in that same neighborhood. Start there and adjust to taste rather than chasing a stronger ratio for a stronger mushroom dose, since the dose is set by what is in the bag, not by how concentrated you brew it.

Read the second column carefully. It mixes a measured fact with an honest "we do not know," and that is the real takeaway of this whole comparison. If your priority is the lowest diterpene load, paper wins clearly and the data backs it. If your priority is knowing you are drinking the full mushroom dose you paid for, French press is the method with real geometry behind that claim, and AeroPress is the one where nobody has published the answer either way.
