Mushroom Coffee vs Matcha: An Honest Comparison

Mushroom Coffee vs Matcha: An Honest Comparison

These two get shelved together as the wellness alternatives to a plain cup of coffee, which does neither any favours. They are different plants, different chemistry, different rituals, and they suit different people.

We sell one of them. That is a reason to be careful here, not a reason to tilt the comparison, so we have tried to name the places matcha genuinely wins.

Two rituals worth choosing between deliberately rather than by trend.

Mushroom Coffee vs Matcha, in Short

Mushroom coffee is roasted coffee blended with functional mushroom powder, so it delivers coffee's caffeine and coffee's flavour. Matcha is whole powdered green tea whisked into water, delivering less caffeine per serving alongside L-theanine, an amino acid coffee does not contain. Mushroom coffee suits people who want to keep coffee. Matcha suits people who want to leave it.

The Chemistry, Kept Honest

Caffeine. Coffee is the stronger stimulant per typical serving. That much is uncontroversial. Precise matcha figures are messier than either side admits: published measurements of caffeine in matcha powder vary widely with cultivar, harvest timing and how much powder goes in the bowl. A 2024 compositional analysis in Foods by Kika and colleagues profiled matcha's phenolic acids and caffeine and found gallic acid the most abundant phenolic acid at 252.38 µg/g. We are not going to quote a single authoritative caffeine number for matcha, because the literature does not support one.

What you can rely on: a standard cup of brewed coffee generally carries more caffeine than a standard bowl of matcha, and the FDA notes that 400 mg of caffeine per day is generally not associated with dangerous negative effects in healthy adults, with individual sensitivity varying widely.

L-theanine. This is matcha's real structural advantage and it is not a marketing invention. L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea and not in coffee. Chromatographic work on tea infusions published in PMC measured L-theanine in green tea infusion at 12.5 ± 2.5 mg per 200 mL, alongside 11 ± 2.1 mg of caffeine. Matcha differs from an infusion because you consume the whole leaf rather than steeping and discarding it, so the amounts that reach you are higher.

If the reason you are looking at alternatives is that coffee makes you feel wired, that difference is the honest reason to try matcha. We would rather tell you that than pretend it is not so.

Beta glucans and mushroom compounds. These are on the mushroom coffee side and matcha has no equivalent. A disclosed 5 percent inclusion at about 15 g of grounds delivers roughly 0.75 g of Lion's Mane per cup. What that amount does is covered honestly in our audit of whether mushroom coffee actually works.

Three points decide this for most people. The rest is taste.

Where Matcha Genuinely Wins

If caffeine is your problem. Lower caffeine per serving plus L-theanine is a materially different profile. No mushroom blend changes coffee's caffeine, because a coffee-based blend is coffee. If jitteriness is the thing you are trying to solve, matcha addresses it and mushroom coffee does not.

If you dislike coffee. Some people simply do not enjoy it. Adding mushrooms to something you do not like produces something you still do not like.

If you want the ceremony. Sifting and whisking is a slower, more deliberate few minutes. For some people that pause is most of the point.

If you want the green tea polyphenols. Catechins are a genuinely different compound class from coffee's chlorogenic acids.

Where Mushroom Coffee Wins

If you like coffee and intend to keep drinking it. This is the decisive one. The most common failure of any morning swap is that people abandon it in a fortnight because they miss their coffee. A functional coffee has a compliance rate close to coffee's, which is close to total.

If you want no new habit or equipment. Same bag, same brewer, same four minutes.

If you want the caffeine. Some mornings need more, not less. That is a legitimate preference.

If you want a stated, checkable amount. A disclosed 90/5/5 ratio lets you multiply grams by percentage and know what is in the cup.

Our broader comparison of mushroom coffee and regular coffee is the right next read if matcha is not really in your consideration set, and boost energy without caffeine covers the lower-stimulant options more fully.

Cost and Practicality

Good ceremonial-grade matcha is expensive per gram and degrades quickly once opened, since powdered leaf oxidises. Cheaper culinary grade is more bitter and is the reason many people conclude they dislike matcha when what they dislike is a low grade whisked badly.

Mushroom coffee sits at a premium over commodity coffee but below good ceremonial matcha in most cases. Run the arithmetic on both: bag price divided by servings per bag. Our ledger on the pros and cons of mushroom coffee shows the method.

Neither is a cheap habit. Both are cheaper than a daily café.

Can You Drink Both?

Yes, and plenty of people should. They are not competing religions. A common pattern that works well is coffee in the morning when you want the lift, matcha in the early afternoon when you want alertness without disturbing sleep later. Total daily caffeine is the number to keep an eye on, not which vessel it arrived in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is matcha healthier than mushroom coffee? Neither has been shown superior to the other in a head-to-head human trial, so the honest answer is that nobody knows. They deliver different compound groups. Choose on caffeine tolerance and taste rather than on a health ranking nobody has established.

Does matcha have less caffeine than mushroom coffee? Generally yes per typical serving, though published matcha measurements vary widely by cultivar, harvest and preparation. A mushroom coffee blend carries whatever its coffee base carries, since the mushrooms do not reduce caffeine.

Which is better for steady energy? Matcha's combination of lower caffeine with L-theanine is the more plausible profile for a gentler curve. Mushroom coffee gives you coffee's curve with a smoother, lower-acid cup.

Can I add mushroom powder to matcha? You can, and some brands sell exactly that. Expect the earthiness to compete with matcha's vegetal notes rather than complement them.

Choosing

If you want to leave coffee behind, or caffeine is genuinely the thing bothering you, matcha is the better answer and we would rather you drank it than bought from us and stopped in two weeks.
